New Athens International Airport

Athens International Airport S.A. is the owner and operator of the new Athens Airport "Eleftherios Venizelos", under construction today in the area of Spata, Attica. Its management structure, unique in Greece, is a public-private partnership, in the form of a Societe Anonyme. The Greek state is the majority shareholder ( 55% ), joined by an international consortium ( 45% ), led by Hochtief AirPort GmbH and including ABB Calor Emag Schaltanlagen AG, Krantz TKT GmbH and Flughafen Athen Spata Projektgesellschaft mbH. The majority of the DM 4.1 bn ( $ 2.4 bn ) fixed project cost will be funded by the European Union, European Investment Bank and bank loans, with the loan paid off from the company's cash flow.
The new Athens Airport "Eleftherios Venizelos" will commence its operation in March 2001, having an annual capacity of 16 million passengers, and being based on state-of-the-art technology.
Having commenced works in July 1996, the project is already at a very satisfactory stage, and works are advancing at a fast pace. The progress is visible in the areas of Main Terminal Building, Control Tower Complex, Fire Rescue Main Station, Utilities Tunnel, while in the end of November the earthworks had already been
completed.
