Athens Metro

Athens Metro is one of the Major Infrastructure Projects presently implemented in Greece and the most complex one in the transport field. Moreover, it is ranked as one of the most important projects in Europe. The design and construction of the project has been assigned to a consortium of French, German and Greek companies, while the management of the project and the supervision of the works is performed by ATTIKO METRO A.E. Company, a legal entity of private law, which will be also responsible for the operation, exploitation and development of the system following the completion of the construction works.

New Athens International Airport

Athens International Airport S.A. is the owner and operator of the new Athens Airport "Eleftherios Venizelos", under construction today in the area of Spata, Attica. Its management structure, unique in Greece, is a public-private partnership, in the form of a Societe Anonyme. The Greek state is the majority shareholder ( 55% ), joined by an international consortium ( 45% ), led by Hochtief AirPort GmbH and including ABB Calor Emag Schaltanlagen AG, Krantz TKT GmbH and Flughafen Athen Spata Projektgesellschaft mbH. The majority of the DM 4.1 bn ( $ 2.4 bn ) fixed project cost will be funded by the European Union, European Investment Bank and bank loans, with the loan paid off from the company's cash flow.

The new Athens Airport "Eleftherios Venizelos" will commence its operation in March 2001, having an annual capacity of 16 million passengers, and being based on state-of-the-art technology.

Having commenced works in July 1996, the project is already at a very satisfactory stage, and works are advancing at a fast pace. The progress is visible in the areas of Main Terminal Building, Control Tower Complex, Fire Rescue Main Station, Utilities Tunnel, while in the end of November the earthworks had already been completed.

The Egnatia Road

The Egnatia Motorway is being constructed to open up a new, modern and safe road connecting the countries of the European Union, the Balkans and the East. It unifies the hinterland of Northern Greece and supports its modernisation, opening new horizons for cross border co-operation with the regional market of the Balkans, which is currently under reform. It also provides improved communication with the countries of the Black Sea and the Middle East.

This motorway constitutes a part of the Transeuropean Network for transport and is one of the fourteen priority projects of the European Union. It is a crucial project for the achievement of the targets of the Single European Market, employment opportunities within and the financial cohesion of the European Union member-states.

Road Axis PATRA - ATHENS - THESSALONIKI - EVZONI «PATHE»

The main road axis of the country, with a total length of 730 km, after taking account of an anticipated shortening by 40 km due to the Maliakos Bay Junction, connects Patra, Athens, Thessaloniki and the Border (PATHE), belongs to the Trans-European Roadway Network and will be upgraded to a modern highway.
